The movie was shot in and around Toronto in Canada between March 22, 2010 and June 28, 2010. A number of new scenes and a revised ending were shot between January 21-29, 2011.

The exteriors of the Norwegian base were shot in an active gravel quarry filled with fake snow just south of Musselman Lake near the town of Whitchurch-Stouffville in Ontario. Interiors (and the scene where Henrik is “absorbed”) were shot at Pinewood Toronto Studios, Port Lands, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The film’s opening scene and the scene where Kate, Adam and Sander arrive at the ice cave were shot at Bear Glacier not far from where the 1982 version was shot in Stewart, British Columbia.

A number of deleted scenes (including the McMurdo exteriors and a scene shot in an actual military aircraft) were shot at the Canadian Forces Base, Trenton, Ontario, Canada.

The deleted New York scenes with Kate and Adam were filmed at Café Victoria, 37 King Street East, Toronto. Extensive changes were made to the downtown coffee shop’s frontage to make it appear like it was in New York.
